Nationwide, students have organized protests over the Israel and Gaza conflict, urging their colleges to divest holdings of Israeli-connected investments. But participation in a protest could lead to steep — and long-lasting — consequences, including criminal charges and loss of financial aid. Jim Simons, the mathematician-investor who created what many in finance consider the world’s greatest moneymaking machine at his secretive firm, Renaissance Technologies, has died. He was 86.  He died Friday in New York City, according to his charitable foundation, which didn’t cite a cause.   In turning from academia to investing as he entered his 40s, Simons eschewed standard practices of money managers in favor of quantitative analysis — finding patterns in data that predicted price changes. Nintendo is bringing more diversity to its board of directors. The video game giant, in its most-recent earnings report, announced plans to appoint three women to the board. Miyoko Demay, Eiko Osawa and Keiko Akashi were named as anticipated new directors, with a planned start date of June 27.
